Locks of Love – Jackie Nguyen

Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss. Locks of Love provides a really great service that helps boost self-esteem and confidence, and we are proud supporters of this organization.

“Make a bold choice for your life and donate!” These are the words of Jackie Nguyen, a Disconnected Client who recently donated over 14 inches to Locks of Love with help from Disconnected Stylist Misty Brown. Jackie has kindly shared her story behind her donation and how transformative of an experience it was for her!

What made you decide to donate to Locks of Love?

I’ve had my long hair for as long as I could remember. It became my identity, my security blanket, and sometimes, even a mask. When it hit New Years Day this year, I promised myself that this year would be about transformation, selflessness and spiritual awakenings. Tons of my friends have donated to Locks of Love before, and I finally felt like it was time for me to contribute to such a wonderful cause. I no longer wanted to hold on to something that I could easily grow, when I had knowledge that there were other people in need. I saw the bigger picture finally and knew that it was time for me to transform, not only physically but spiritually. It sounds a bit frou-frou if you will, but it was so real to me.

Do you know anyone personally affected by the Locks of Love organization?
My God Mother, Lisa, recently passed away last year from cancer, and she constantly praised the organization. I kept her spirit in my heart and mind while my hair was being cut.

Would you recommend others to do it and why?
Yes, yes, yes, yes. First of all, because to us, it’s JUST HAIR! But to others in need, it is so much more than that. You are gifting another person with confidence, love, and a spectacular new perspective on life. Plus, hair grows back. It’ll be back to normal before you can even realize, therefore why not.

How does it feel to have shorter hair?
It’s a term I like to call “coo-coo banana’s ya’ll”! I feel like a completely different person – in a good way. I donated 14 inches, which means 14 inches LESS to wash, style, worry about, etc. I used to sit on my hair by accident. Now, I can buy half as much shampoo and it takes like two seconds to dry. Spiritually, it freed me.

Would you recommend Disconnected Salon to others for a Locks of Love contribution?
Absolutely. I had Misty cut and style my hair. She is ferosh, hip, lovable and has immeasurable talent. I connected with her instantaneously and she made me feel ten times better about my decision to donate.
